TO: Proximity media team members FROM: Scott Villa SUBJECT: Blog post analysis memo Date: Feb 02, 2010 We were asked to summarize a blog post in order to create questions to include in Proximity’s fall survey. This is my summary of an OK Magazine article about an unbelievable amount musicians coming together to record a version of “We are the World”. I suggest we include questions which ask the students of Towson how they feel about these artists coming together to re-create history. What is “We are the World” This will be a re-creation of what Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Billy Joel, Bob Dylan and many more artists did 25 years ago. The proceeds of the single and music video will be directly donated to a Haiti earthquake relief fund. As reported by Luisa Metcalfe in OK Magazine, some artists included were Carlos Santana, Lil Wayne, and the daughter of Lionel Richie, one of the artists who recorded it in 1985. Entertainment Tonight’s Mary Hart, the only TV host allowed into the recording, says that “Lionel Richie is thrilled with the turnout of stars from Pink to Jamie Foxx”. Why is this recording important This coming together of artists who have such different styles of music, symbolizes two important trends that we must look at when talking about how Gen Y relates to music. “We are the World”- I’m sure there is at least one artist involved in this new project that almost anyone from Gen Y can relate to. Some artists such as Jay-Z, object to the re-recording of this historical song, stating it is “Michael Jackson’s baby” and shouldn’t be changed. It will be interesting to see if students from the Gen Y will be influenced by this recording since many of them were only a few years old, if alive at all, when the original was recorded. Haiti Earthquake Relief- All of the proceeds from the single and music video will be given to Haiti to help after their recent natural disaster. Because of the artists involved, I believe Gen Y will be targeted as an audience for this 25th anniversary performance. Questions to ask TU students We would like to know if students from Gen Y are affected by this re-creation and if they have contributed in any way to the earthquake relief. ·Does this 25th anniversary recording of “We are the World” interest you? ·Of the artists involved, who are you looking most forward to seeing? ·How do you feel about the earthquake in Haiti? Have you donated in any way? Reference Metcalfe, L. (2010, February 02) Music legends gather to record 25th anniversary version of “We are the World”. OK Magazine. We were asked to summarize a blog post in order to create questions to include in Proximity’s fall survey. This is my summary of an OK Magazine article about an unbelievable amount musicians coming together to record a version of “We are the World”. I suggest we include questions which ask the students of Towson how they feel about these artists coming together to re-create history.
What is “We are the World”
This will be a re-creation of what Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Billy Joel, Bob Dylan and many more artists did 25 years ago.
Why is this recording important
This coming together of artists who have such different styles of music, symbolizes two important trends that we must look at when talking about how Gen Y relates to music.
Questions to ask TU students
We would like to know if students from Gen Y are affected by this re-creation and if they have contributed in any way to the earthquake relief.
· Does this 25th anniversary recording of “We are the World” interest you?
· Of the artists involved, who are you looking most forward to seeing?
· How do you feel about the earthquake in Haiti? Have you donated in any way?
